Elephanta Festival is one of the most celebrated festival in Mumbai. The festival is observed in the month of February every year at Elephanta islands. During the festival the entire island turns in to a festive place with a large number of performers displaying their dance feats. The two days long Elephanta Festival is organised by Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) every year with a view to promote culture and tourism in Mumbai. Performers from all across the country come to participate in the festival as it offers an apt platform to showcase ones dancing prowess. The cyclopean auditorium where the dances are performed is beautifully illuminated with lights and a huge, decorated idol of Lord Shiva. Folk dances performed by the local fisherman have become a popular feature of the event, besides the other performances. People, who have taste for performing arts, along with national and international tourists, come to attend this dance and music festival of national importance. The tasteful local food served during the festival is also a treat for taste buds.
